Chef's Kiss!
This year, I made a personal commitment to enroll in the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program (PIDP). Let me emphasize that, in my opinion, there is never a perfect time to embark on something new. Despite being constantly busy, especially now with a baby due in 3 weeks, expanding my childcare center, and wrapping up two teaching contracts, I found myself swamped...and that's an understatement. Nevertheless, I achieved it!
Completing the first course was truly rewarding. As I highly value my time, I directly applied the course content to my ongoing projects. Not only did I gain valuable knowledge and boost my confidence, but I also enhanced my platforms simultaneously. Admittedly, I did miss a deadline or two. I don't possess any superhuman time management abilities, but I effectively allocated my time as much as possible and remained focused on my objective.
For my last assignment, I had to discuss my conversation with an instructor from a different industry regarding their teaching experience. I was truly impressed by the passion and dedication of my partner towards the food industry. Interestingly, she resembled me as she not only was working on the course but also had a soft opening for a new restaurant where she serves as the head chef.
Here is a brief overview of my discussion with her:
Opening a restaurant can be quite challenging, especially in today's environment.
Various factors need to be taken into account, such as food budgeting, staffing costs, leadership skills, time management, recognizing each team member, working under pressure, and managing continuously increasing operating costs.
To launch a successful restaurant, a strong foundation of passion is crucial. Without it, it becomes difficult to persevere when faced with challenges.
Drawing from personal experience, I have been involved in the restaurant industry since I was eight years old, witnessing firsthand the dedication required for a restaurant to thrive.
Experience grows with time and failure and that’s okay.
Student’s need to understand their “why” to be successful in any industry.
My learning partner's passion for the food industry plays a crucial role in her achievements. Not only does she excel as the head chef, but she also imparts culinary knowledge through teaching industry courses. This demonstrates that determination, enthusiasm, and dedication are essential in achieving one's aspirations. While this may mark just the beginning, it signifies progress towards the ultimate goal.
